There is a prior question. Before you can know where family fits in you have to know who your family is. The reason I like the Mark 3 passage so much is that there Jesus asks the question explicitly. Real nice. Powerful call to self-choosing- but it's hard and often unpleasant when someone else comes into their own in a way that is uncomfortable to us- maybe that's why parenting is so hard haha.
