“ I don’t believe in action anymore.” I have a problem with belief in this sense. “I feel” ditto. A dear friend once described to me the difference between “I believe,” “I feel,” and “I think.” I think I prefer the latter.

Interesting. I'm curious, what is the sense of "belief" you have a problem with?

I think I'm using the word here in its ordinary sense. But I don't think what I want to do in the essay depends on what we mean by "belief," anyway. I wanted to describe a preconception I instinctively held for many years which I have grown out of. The growth and change is what I wanted to bring out.

It also occurs to me that in the sentence you mention the relevant verb as it is written is (not just "believe") but "believe in." You could substitute "think," but then the sentence would have to read "I don't think action exists anymore." That would be equivalent.
